Longhorn Ranch Dubois, Wy
Dubois day 1
We evacuated Seedskadee very early. I was positive we
were leaving a trail of moths behind us. Swallows were swooping all around the
coach as we drove out of the park.
The drive to Dubois was uneventful. Roads in Wyoming just
seem to go on forever…
Our site at the Longhorn Ranch is right on the river with
a grassy slope between us and the water. Three separate flocks of Canada Geese
make this grassy area their morning and evening meal spots.
Very windy! Not a good day to be outside!
That we were rid of the moths turned out to be wishful
thinking. As we settled down for the night ready to spend some time reading the
moths resumed their attack. The onslaught was slow, coming in ones and twos
which we easily caught and executed. As soon as we settled back down here came
some more. Eventually, after more than an hour of doing battle, we decided to
turn out the lights and go to sleep. That didn’t stop them. Soon we could hear
them bumping into the walls of the shower. It was still pretty light out so the
light from the skylight was attracting them. By the time we couldn’t stand it
anymore there were a dozen or more in the shower. I switched to a constant
spray of Sprayway Glass Cleaner and was rewarded by carcasses on the floor.
Yippee…! But that wasn’t the end. Rob
took his turn favoring Clean Shower. Both weapons proved successful. Once it
got dark outside the moths went to sleep and so did we.
Dubois day 2
This morning a few flew out of the outside bay as I got Dusty’s
breakfast. Rob decided to open all the bays and the engine compartment and just
let the wind blow them out. This was only partially successful. It appears they
prefer to come out at night. Looked them
up on the internet and found that they are probably miller moths and insecticide
has no affect. The recommended solution is to put a bucket of soapy water under
a light. They will fall off into the bucket and the soap prevents them from
escaping. Maybe we’ll try that tonight.
Dubois day 3
We’re winning! Fewer than 20 showed up last night and one
this morning. That’s the good news. The bad news…it’s cold and windy. The river
we are camped next to is called the Wind River…aptly named.
We leave tomorrow for Ten Sleep which has very limited
provisions. The closest town is about 40 miles away. The big event for today is
to head to town and pick up enough supplies for the next six days. There’s only
one small grocery in Dubois, but it is open on Sunday. Prices are pretty steep!
